Batteries · Regulation (EU) 2023/1542

The battery passport. Ready before 18 February 2027.

You enter the battery data following the Commission guidance, and DPPera keeps track of the required fields and access levels. You get a permanent GS1 Digital Link address, a print-ready QR code and a file for the EU DPP registry.

Two passports free, no card. For EV, LMT and industrial batteries above 2 kWh.

Check your battery. Three categories get a passport.

The category follows from the use and from the weight or capacity, not from the product name. The editor asks two questions to settle it, and every battery gets a QR code anyway.

Passport: yes

Electric vehicle batteries

Traction batteries for cars, buses and lorries, and for category L vehicles heavier than 25 kg.

Art. 77(1)

Passport: yes

LMT batteries

Light means of transport: e-bikes, e-scooters, electric mopeds. Sealed batteries up to 25 kg.

Art. 77(1)

Passport: yes

Industrial above 2 kWh

Energy storage, forklifts, UPS, machine batteries. What counts is a capacity above 2 kWh.

Art. 77(1)

No passport

Portable, SLI and industrial up to 2 kWh

They need no passport, but from 18 Feb 2027 they must carry a QR code with information about the battery.

Art. 13(6)

You enter the data once. Everyone sees only their part.

Annex XIII splits the passport data into access levels. For every field and document you set who can see it, and the defaults come from the regulation.

Level 1

Anyone who scans the code

  • Manufacturer, model, category and identifier
  • Battery chemistry and critical raw materials
  • Carbon footprint and recycled content
  • Capacity, voltage and expected lifetime
  • Separate collection and safe use

Level 2

Repairer, recycler, next owner

  • Detailed composition of cathode, anode and electrolyte
  • Part numbers and a contact for spare parts
  • Dismantling instructions, exploded diagram
  • Safety measures for dismantling
  • State of health (SoH) and history

Level 3

Authorities and the Commission

  • Results of tests proving compliance
  • Test reports for conformity assessment
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • Everything from the public and repair levels

You do it in four steps. The model once, items from it.

You enter the parameters on the battery model. Every item inherits them and gets its own serial number in the address.

01

You pick the battery type

Two questions: what it is for, and how much it weighs or what capacity it has. The editor sets the category and the list of required fields.

02

You create the model

Chemistry, capacity, voltage, manufacturer and plant. The chemistry suggests critical raw materials, substances and extinguishing agents.

03

You add documents

Declaration of conformity, dismantling files, test reports. For each file you pick an access level and an expiry date.

04

You publish

A permanent GS1 Digital Link address, a QR code in SVG, EPS and PNG for print, and a JSON or XML file for the DPP registry.

DPP registry: battery passports cannot be registered yet

The Commission registry has been live since 20 Jul 2026, but the battery data catalogue is not ready and a passport cannot be registered today. You can prepare the registry file now and send it once registration opens.

Start with two passports for free.

Then the Brand plan at 119 zł a month (50 passports) or Studio at 349 zł (500). Net prices; pay yearly and you pay for 10 months.

Battery passport questions. Short, with the source.

From when must a battery have a digital passport?

From 18 February 2027 for every LMT battery, industrial battery above 2 kWh and electric vehicle battery placed on the EU market (Article 77 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542).

Is the passport per model or per battery?

Per individual battery. You enter the shared data on the model, and every item gets its own identifier and address.

Does my e-bike battery need a passport?

Yes, if it is an LMT battery: sealed, up to 25 kg, designed to power a light means of transport.

Do I need a GTIN and GS1 membership?

No. GS1 Digital Link with a GTIN is one option, and a passport can also have a permanent address without a GTIN. More in Do you need GS1 for a DPP.

What if the passport provider disappears?

The regulation requires a backup copy of the passport with an independent provider (ESPR Article 10(4)). In DPPera you export the data at any time, in an open format.
